The New Orleans Track Club: A Legacy of Running in the Crescent City

The New Orleans Track Club (NOTC) stands as a testament to the enduring passion for running and fitness in the Gulf South, boasting a rich history that stretches back over six decades. As one of the oldest running clubs in the nation, its story begins with a simple, grassroots mission that has since blossomed into a powerful non-profit organization promoting health, competition, and community across the New Orleans metro area.

The Grassroots Beginning (1963)

The NOTC was officially founded in 1963 by a small, dedicated group of local runners. The club’s origin story is rooted in true amateur athletics, reportedly initiated by a collection of alumni and enthusiasts from local high schools like Brother Martin and Jesuit. Their initial goal was straightforward: to promote and organize running events in a city where organized road racing was scarce.

The early days were marked by a charming, casual administration. Stories from founding members recall that the club's entire treasury was once kept in a simple cigar box, and the administrative labor was entirely volunteer-driven. Despite these humble beginnings, the commitment was clear: running was a competitive sport, a vital path to physical fitness, and an activity meant to be shared.

Era of Expansion and Professionalization

From its cigar-box treasury, the NOTC steadily professionalized and grew. Today, the organization boasts an expansive membership of over 2,000 runners, walkers, and wheelchair athletes, making it a major player in regional athletics. This growth necessitated a transition to a more structured, non-profit framework.

The club is administered by its membership, with officers and a Board of Directors elected annually. While it now employs professional staff, including a race director, the core of its operation remains fiercely volunteer-based. This structure is a cornerstone of the NOTC’s identity, allowing it to maintain minimal entry fees to cover event costs while ensuring that the organization remains dedicated to its members’ interests. To affirm its professional standing and commitment to the sport, the NOTC is affiliated with the Road Runners Club of America (RRCA) and the USA Track and Field Association (USATF).

Fostering New Orleans’ Unique Race Culture

The NOTC has been instrumental in shaping the running calendar and culture of the Crescent City. Its event philosophy is unique, often blending athletic competition with the festive, social atmosphere for which New Orleans is known.

The club is renowned for its Grand Prix Race Series, a staple in the local running community. Signature events often capitalize on the region’s distinctive calendar and geography, including:

  • The Mardi Gras 10K/5K: Kicking off the carnival season.

  • The Greek Festival Run & Walk: An iconic integration of sport and community celebration.

  • The Jackson Day Race: One of the oldest races in the area, offering a challenging distance.

  • The Summer Series: A casual, multi-race series designed to help runners beat the New Orleans heat and maintain fitness through the summer months.

Historically, the NOTC race environment fostered significant post-race camaraderie, often involving celebratory food and drink. While modern leadership has emphasized inclusivity and expanding the range of family-friendly events, the spirit of social connection remains a defining characteristic of every NOTC finish line.

Commitment to Community and Youth

As a non-profit entity, the NOTC’s impact extends far beyond the finish line. Its commitment to volunteering allows for the execution of high-quality races with low barriers to entry.

Crucially, the organization funnels its resources back into the community:

  • Charitable Giving: Each year, the NOTC contributes thousands of dollars to charitable organizations throughout the New Orleans metro area.

  • Youth Development: The club strongly supports the future of the sport by providing vital resources to local lower, middle, and high school cross-country programs, helping cultivate the next generation of runners.

By blending athletic rigor with a deeply rooted commitment to its community and history, the New Orleans Track Club continues its mission to promote running and walking as essential, life-enriching activities for everyone.
