Kevin Castille, of Lafayette, LA, won the Wall 30k Race held at the East Bank Bridge Park in Destrehan Sunday, January 30, 2011. Castille completed the 18.6-mile course in a record-setting 1:39:46, running at an average pace of 5:21 per mile. Christine Derbins was the female champion of the 30K event in a time of 2:16:37 (7:19 pace).
The 10k race was won by Matt Manning in a time of 32:48 (5:16 per mile). Raquel Gros was the 10k female champion in a time of 43:07 (6:56 pace).
This year marked the 32nd running of the Wall, which had 241 participants for both distances plus walkers and race walkers. The event featured a half-ton of awards for the overall and division winners; full sized bricks with a plaque highlighting the event and their achievement. Ideal running conditions of a moderate temperature and very little wind helped in the record setting run, surpassing Frank Trammel's 1:40:14 set in 1980. Mr. Castille will be running the Rock 'n' Roll Mardi Gras Marathon next month and is hoping for a US Olympic marathon qualifying time.
The Wall featured a 30k race, a 10k race and race walking that ran on the top of the levee and relied on a partnership of St Charles Parish, Jefferson Parish and the Ponchartrain Levee District.
The New Orleans Track Club, a nonprofit organization dedicated to promoting health and wellness through running and walking in the greater New Orleans area produced the race with the help of many dedicated volunteers, including Girls On The Run who supported the aid stations. The event was sponsored by Mo Emory, Kona Fitness, Kentwood Springs Water, Southern Eagle Sales and Service, Blue Runner Beans, Flettrich Audio and Chee Wee's.
